Low-Carb sucks
My wife and I recently made the decision to indulge ourselves in a second honeymoon, and we're going back to where we took our first ... Walt Disney World. I vowed that I was going to drop a few pounds, and since that motivation got me to drop about 60 pounds last time, I figure I should be able to do the same this time. The difference is last time, I made a fairly small change. I simply stopped drinking regular soda, and started playing a lot of Dance Dance Revolution.
This time, I decided that I needed to make a chance that would be more long-lasting, something that I could maintain even after my wonderful vacation was over. I did some research into low-carb diets, and and decided that at a bear minimum, I needed to drastically reduce my sugar intake. Looking back, that's pretty much how I managed my weight loss the first time ... getting the sugar out of my drinks was the first step (which I've kept up), but I think I've added sugar in other places.
I'll say this ... I've only being doing this in earnest for two days now, and it's BRUTAL. I have a wicked headache, which could be caffeine withdrawl, or the carbs playing with my brain, but it'll supposedly only get worse. We went shopping tonight (my wife is joining me in the diet), and it's also not cheap. I'm sure it'll get better once we've moved into another phase of the diet (the first phase is pretty drastic), but buying lots of high-protein, low-carb foods was not an inexpensive proposition.
I've got until the first week of August to get my weight down. At the risk of humiliating myself, I'm at 260 right now. My long-term goal is 180 (losing roughly 1/3 of my body weight), but I'm shooting for 220 for August, which is definitely doable. I'm also going to be watching my body composition with a special scale, and while I'm not going to share those numbers, trust that I'm not just looking to lose weight, but actual fat as well.
I'll keep you posted.
