Activision CEO predicts second PSP delay in U.S. - Aug. 18, 2004

As sexy as the PSP is, another delay coupled with what is expected to be an inordinately large price tag, then compunded with the closed format for playing movies, is likely going to cause Sony some major problems. Nintendo's DS will have launched 6-8 months earlier, at a lower price point (by possibly a full $100), and will have Nintendo's backwards compatibility with the industry dominating Game Boy Advance. That combination may be difficult for Sony to overcome. Plus, the PSP is essentially a PS2 in portable form, but one that will require gamers to repurchase all their PS2 games if they want to play them away from the console. While that's pretty powerful stuff, it's going to be a little one-note; Nintendo is doing some innovative stuff with the touchpad on the DS.

It's going to be interesting to watch, for sure, and being a gadget freak, I'm going to want them both. But while I'll get a DS as soon as I can, the PSP is one I'm going to wait on. I don't relish re-buying my favorite movies and games in another format.
