What Does British “Anti-Standby” Law Mean for WiiConnect 24? | Playfeed
My buddies over at PlayFeed just posted an interesting article about a potential problem Nintendo will have overseas when Wii is released later this year. The UK government just passed a law outlawing "standby" mode for electronics and applianced. Turns out that around 8% of the nations power is being sucked up by these devices that aren't even being used.
Why is this a problem for Nintendo? Because the Wii was designed to sit in standby mode and download content for you overnight, and it's an integral part of the design. If Nintendo can't sell the Wii as-is in the UK, will they revamp it for that market, simply not sell it there, or possibly remove the feature entirely? It's quite the quandry.
Sort of makes you think about how much power is being sucked out of your home by things you're not using, though, doesn't it?
