Next Generation - Rare's Perfect Gamble
What do you do when you need a game out for a major console launch, and the normal certification process is too slow? Simple ... break the rules.
That's what Microsoft and Rare did with Perfect Dark Zero. The decision was made to start pressing the discs before the game passed certification. Luckily, the gamble paid off and the game passed certification after the fact. What would have happened if the game had failed? They'd have had to scrap all of the discs and start from scratch.
While this is the first time we've heard of a company admitting to loosening guidelines (there is still no response about Project Gotham Racing 3 rendering lower than 720p internally), other console manufacturers have certainly done it. Gran Turismo 3 was well known as a terribly buggy game, and there were several instances of flaws that would have failed even Sony's basic certification process.
