Game Development Education
I'm taking a series of courses at Cascadia Community College in Bothell, WA which will earn me a certificate in Game Design. I'm trying to get back into the game industry after a significant hiatus, so I figured it couldn't hurt. I'll graduate this summer with an Associate's Degree, along with my certificate, and then I plan on going into the Business degree program at the UW. I chose Business because I want to be a producer. While I think I could handle programming or something on the technical side, I think I'd be better on the non-technical side.
When talking about my education, my wife actually suggested (despite the expense) that I should see about getting into Digipen. I looked them up, along with a few others, and found something interesting. None of the schools with Game Development programs don't have anything regarding the BUSINESS side of the game business. One could argue that a standard business education would be fine, but having been in the industry, I think there are enough differences and nuances that some sort of specialized Business education might not be a bad idea.
I'm going to be going to a game industry job fair this weekend, where I hope to do some networking, and maybe see if I can find an answer to that question. Oh, and find myself a job to boot.
