Halo 2

So while most of the rest of the country was waiting in line for their copies of Halo 2, I had mine in my gubby mitts on Monday, courtesy of Microsoft's PR firm. It's good to be the press.

That said, the game is better than the first, but still not quite my cup of tea. I must be the only one, but something about Halo turns me off a great deal. Many of the same gripes I have about the original are still true in the sequel (save for play on Live), like the very rough nature of the in-engine cutscenes. But even that's not it. I like first-person shooters a great deal, but something about Halo just isn't doing it for me.

Still, even as a game I don't particularly enjoy, I can't help but applaud Bungie for what is a great achievement in gaming ... a game that hits the mass market so squarely that it stand around for hours dazed.

Oh, almost forgot to mention. This has to be the first time that I've ever been sent a game for review, and got a list of criteria of what I can and can't discuss regarding the game. Certain items, plot points, play styles, etc. I'm all for hiding spoilers where warranted, but the story is so convoluted this time that there is little left to discuss. I can't even discuss the opening cinematic in full because of spoilers. I'm just plain stunned.

Goodness! How do you get that dream job?

Oh, it's hardly a dream job. When a huge game like Halo 2 comes out, it can seem like it. Most of the time you're reviewing some pretty bad games, and forced to play through them to give them a fair shake.

My current "job" gives me hardly any words to play with, so it gives me more leeway, but deadlines and whatnot make it a real drag at times.

Honestly, the best part can be the press junkets, but only if you like to travel.
