Ken Kutaragi just doesn't get it!

I'm usually not one to lambast people for doing stupid things, but when they stubbornly defend the stupid decision with even more "head in the sand" rationale, it gets my ire up.

In this case, the PSP has a design flaw. Because of the size of the LCD screen, and the relatively svelt size of the PSP, the trigger mechanism for the Square button (the one closest to the screen) was moved from directly underneath the button, to off to the right slightly.

The result of this design compromise is that the square button needs to be pressed deliberately on the right, and if you don't, the button press might not be recognized, and sometimes the button can stick.

Kutaragi's response is that they didn't want to make the screen smaller, nor did they want to make the case longer, so this is the design. And it's up to us gamers (and the developers) to adapt to it. Never mind the hundreds of machines being returned as defective, which Kutaragi effectively admitted to.

It's Kutaragi's response that baffled me. "I believe we made the most beautiful thing in the world. Nobody would criticize a renowned architect's blueprint that the position of a gate is wrong. It's the same as that." Yeah, it's the exact same, except that in this case, the gate would get stuck, and sometimes not open at all, keeping you out of your house. And yes, we would absolutely blame the architect for that.

After figuring out what a PSP is(I think), I'll have to agree with you, this Ken fellow does indeed seem to be an idiot. And now he's just digging himself into a hole that will lead to the end of his current job.

The PSP is the PlayStation Portable. It's Sony's attempt to wrest some of the handheld market away from Nintendo, as well as create a portable media player.

Ken Kutaragi is the head of the PlayStation division for Sony.
