Saint's Row
I got Saint's Row in the mail from GameFly yesterday afternoon, and the first impression it makes is very positive. I know that a lot of people are calling it a Grand Theft Auto rip-off, and I think even Volition (the developers) have stated that they wanted to make a better GTA.
The game has a lot of, shall I say, flavor. I've laughed out loud several times when particularly amusing scenes are played out, such as the first drug trafficking mission I discovered. The dealer is shooting his bodyguard (repeatedly) for stealing from him. You're asked to fill in for the bodyguard, because, "I don't think Billy's going to make it in today," punctuating the line with one last bullet.
Strangely enough, I think this might be a game my wife could get into. She's not much of a gamer, but she really liked the idea of running over people in GTA, and she loved the car crashes in Burnout Revenge (what can I say, she's a little twisted), so I think it might simply be a matter of getting her liquored up enough and putting the controller in her hand.
One thing I simply can't get over is the the strange look of some of the characters. One of the main characters, Julius, has a particularly ghoulish look about him. Perhaps it's the way that the light reflects off of his bottom eyelids, or perhaps it's just a classic "uncanny valley" problem, but either way, it's disconcerting. The game isn't even trying to hit realistic, opting for a slightly cartoony art style that I really enjoy, but there are a couple of characters that just don't feel right.
Along with Saint's Row, I got Prey (who's demo I wasn't terribly impressed with), and Enchanted Arms arrives tomorrow. I've heard mixed reviews about Arms, and I wasn't at all attracted to the demo at PAX, but I'll give it a shot.
