Xbox 360 Faceplates
Talking with some friends in retail yesterday, I came across the strangest of tidbits. Andru already mentioned over at Playfeed how crazy-popular Xbox 360 faceplates are. I'm finding that it's certain specific designs getting all the attention, and surprisingly, the ones I figured would be most popular (the more subtle ones with just a touch of personality) ... aren't.
The most popular faceplate according to an informal poll of retail stores in the Seattle area? WOODY.
That's right, apparently in the Pacific Northwest, we want our Xbox to look like it's carved out of wood. That's just crazy. Plenty of silver and "hot rod" faceplates to be had, but nary a Woody in sight. I never would have guessed it, but apparently Microsoft did.
Of course, this all ties back in to what I was talking about last week ... how consumers want to personalize their technology to themselves. Microsoft "gets it", and made the Xbox customizeable from the look of the hardware to the look of the OS, right down to the Gamer Cards like mine on the sidebar. No wonder there is so much demand.

They're totally right. My generation is gonzo for customization. I know I am. I don't think I'd spend $20 on a piece of plastic, but I might spend $10 if the design was really cool. However, I'd rather have a limited edition faceplate of some kind. I wish I had one of those E3 2005 ones, or the Zero Hero one (which looks really cool).
Faceplates are nice, but it does you no good if you don't have an Xbox 360, like me.
